For background: To better control and regulate the trade in gold, merchants and rulers in West Africa developed brass weights called 'abrammuo' that set standard units of measure. This scorpion is a vintage gold weight, cast from brass and inspired by an Akan belief that the scorpion often served as a metaphor for a warrior.
